The Mysteries of Skolivski Beskydy:
the ridge of Kliuch Mountain

Why this tour?

The ridge of Kliuch mountain is not as high as the other mountain ranges in Skolivski Beskydy, and for that reason it is sometimes considered as not a too attractive destination for the experienced hillwalkers. Which might be true if you don’t know what to look for: the place is full of exciting geological sites. The lengthy but easy walk will lead you to Polyanytske Lake, the picturesque tectonic canyon-like rift, and rocky groups nicknamed Stonehenge and Easter Island. The ridge is also known as a WWI battle place.

Highlights

The Kliuch ridge — is not very high (927 m), but is well-known as a WWI battle place. There are also many interesting geological sites, such as picturesque rock groups and outcrops.
Polyanytske Lake — is a picturesque and easily accessible, but not a very well-known lake. It is a local hydrological site of interest, located in the Polyanytsky Regional Landscape Park.
A tectonic canyon-like fault — is an interesting geological site near the top of Kliuch Mountain. It does not have a river flowing in the bottom and therefore can be easily accessed and viewed. The fault sometimes reaches 5-7 meters deep and has a form of the Latin letter Y.
The Memorial to the Legion Ukrainian Sich Riflemen — was erected on the burial place of the Ukrainian soldiers who fought in WWI on the side of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and were killed in the battle in November 1914. The community of Trukhaniv village takes care of the Memorial.
Picturesque rock outcrops cover the slopes of the Kliuch ridge. The most famous rock groups were nicknamed Stonehenge and Easter Island by tourists. There also a few small grottos among the rocks.
